The Rise of AI Coding Teachers – How GPT-4 Fast-Tracked Beginners to Advanced Coders

  1. GPT-4 enabled an entrepreneur with no coding experience to learn Python and build web applications in just 7 months.
  2. GPT-4’s emerging capability as an AI coding teacher has inspired others to leverage it to learn programming.
  3. GPT-4 allows coding novices to accomplish basic tasks fast, learn programming simultaneously, and requires little upfront investment.
  4. Major tech firms like Google provide platforms to build with Python while also offering courses to learn it, shifting towards user education.
  5. Programming self-directed learning through AI may become more mainstream as tech skills demands evolve.

Recent tweets by Josh Olin, founder of WeGPT.ai, highlighted how GPT-4 enabled him to build web requests and applications using Python despite having no prior coding knowledge. Over seven months starting last April, Olin used GPT-4 to create the fundamental capability of fetching HTTP data from an API endpoint. The resulting code was put in Gist, allowing GPT-4 to continuously improve itself by providing new feature requests, suggesting improvements, and fixing bugs.

Olin’s experience demonstrates GPT-4’s emerging capability as a coding teacher, inspiring others to experiment as well. With GPT-4’s versatility, programming has become a prominent real-world application, allowing even coding novices to build apps and become programmers.

The Rise of AI Coding Teachers – How GPT-4 Fast-Tracked Beginners to Advanced Coders

Traditionally, someone would need four years of computer science training or 6-12 months of dedicated certification courses to become proficient in Python. With GPT-4, one can accomplish basic programming tasks in minutes and simultaneously learn the Python language. With an OpenAI API or ChatGPT-4 subscription, users can program and learn with little upfront investment beyond the subscription cost. GPT-4 also enables combining features to tweak functions as needed.

In a video shared by Daniel Ávila Arias, co-founder of CodeGPT, the CodeGPT extension is used with OpenAI to review Python code, demonstrating how GPT-4 accelerates coding. With GPT-4 Vision, coding is taken to another level – even basic drawings or whiteboard scribbles can generate full code programs.

While GPT-4 and ChatGPT enable different forms of self-learning, questions remain about the fate of human coding teachers. A University of Toronto study observed that AI coding assistants like OpenAI Codex enhanced novice programmers’ performance by enabling them to write code more efficiently and with less frustration. So while the tools may not wholly replace teachers, they excel as knowledge accelerators. Those with some Python experience can utilize them most effectively.

Major tech companies are shifting towards both educating users in programming and providing the tools to apply those skills. Alongside Python development platforms, Google offers exclusive coding courses. With AI’s massive advancements in 2023, learning goals also shifted – discussions emerged on studying for jobs that may not exist in the future.

IBM executive Mathew Candy recently said computer science degrees may not be necessary to get tech jobs as it gets easier for non-technical people to build products using AI. This hints at a future shift in learning and employment that requires self-directed learning, especially programming.

In 2024, we may see more GPT-4 use cases and applications emerge that enable practical programming abilities for the mainstream. Its role as an AI coding teacher is only beginning.
