Tegmark kicked things off with an unsettling demonstration of just how far voice cloning technology has come, using only a few syllables from each panelist to generate elaborate impersonations of them. This prompted reflections on the blurry line between narrow AI and artificial general intelligence (AGI).

LeCun argued that we should talk about “human-level AI” rather than AGI, as machines are far from attaining the breadth of human cognition currently. The way forward is to enable systems to learn as efficiently as humans and animals do. Rus agreed, advocating an incremental approach of starting simple and slowly increasing complexity, using biology as a model.

However, Russell and Leahy sounded notes of caution about charging ahead. Russell highlighted the gap between knowledge and action, stating there should be limits on what we know, what we build and how technologies are applied. He questioned whether it’s advisable for everyone to have a powerful AI assistant in their pocket that can think in human-like ways. Leahy added that the very usefulness of AI also makes it dangerous, much like nuclear or bioweapons technologies.

While LeCun found dystopian scenarios of AI taking over humanity too far-fetched, Russell stressed assessing risks upfront rather than barreling ahead and trying to fix problems later. Rus was more optimistic about using AI safely, citing progress in bias detection and mitigation.

In the end, panelists converged on the need for new architectures and approaches – LeCun proposing “objective-driven AI” with safeguards, Rus advocating “liquid networks”, and Leahy championing a “social technology” paradigm centered on humans.

The debate highlighted open questions around whether we can harness AI’s rapid evolution to improve lives without losing control. More conversations bridging different perspectives will be key to finding the right balance. For now, the jury is out on whether we can rein in increasingly unbridled technologies.
