A new AI image generation method called InstantID can swiftly recognize a person’s identity and deepfake new images using only a single photo as a reference, according to a recent paper published by the InstantX research team in Beijing. However, Reuven Cohen, an enterprise AI advisor to Fortune 500 corporations who considers InstantID the “new state-of-the-art,” informed VentureBeat that the innovative approach has a significant drawback: it will unleash a deluge of deepfake audio, visuals, and videos, precisely when the 2024 election looms near.
“The simplicity of constructing deepfakes using tools like InstantID is very worrying given the efficiency of output creation without any fine-tuning or training necessary,” he remarked. “InstantID’s capacity to efficiently produce identity-preserving content could lead to extremely realistic and convincing deep fakes with minimal GPU and CPU resources needed.”
AI InstantID Surpasses LoRA for Identifiable AI Image Generation
According to Cohen, InstantID exceeds LoRA—compact, fine-tuned models trained on a limited set of parameters like particular characters or styles—which has resulted in an outpouring of creations by LoRA enthusiasts shared on controversial platforms such as Civitai. Cohen clarified that InstantID is an instrument for zero-shot identity-preserving generation, which varies significantly from LoRA and QLoRA—an approach that builds on LoRA by first condensing or downsizing the model’s data, additionally decreasing the resources essential for fine-tuning.
Until this point, he said, QLoRA represented the state-of-the-art. “While LoRA and QLoRA are procedures for fine-tuning models by modernizing a subset of model parameters or administering quantization for efficiency, InstantID concentrates on producing outputs that maintain the identity qualities of the input data through a rapid and efficient methodology.”
